Most people think it is just the fur that causes cat allergies, however this is incorrect. Did you know that there are eight different cat allergens that have been identified! These have been found in cat saliva, fur, urine, and feces. These allergens may cause a reaction in one person but not someone else, although most people who are are allergic, will be allergic to more than one cat allergen.
The majority of cat allergies are caused by a small stable glycoprotein called Fel d1. During grooming, Fel-d1 from saliva becomes airborne and is easily transferred to household carpet and furniture and clothing. The allergen from the skin glands stays on the fur and is also transferred to furniture, carpet, and clothing. Litter trays often contain the highest amount of Fel d1, as the highest concentrations are found in the anal glands.
Fur length does not increase or decrease the amount of allergen produced. However, studies have shown that neutering sharply reduces the levels of Fel-d 1 in male cats. The allergen is hormonally controlled, with non-neutered male cats producing the highest amounts.
Bengal cats are commonly thought of as less hypoallergenic as they shed less fur than other cats, this certainly does help, but be aware its not just the fur that can cause allergies.
Always try to do an in person kitten visit when choosing your new Bengal kitten, as being in their enviroment will expose you to the allergen's and this will give you a good indication if you are allergic or not.
